Iron deficiency anemia is now the number one cause of lost disability-adjusted life years in adolescent girls globally. Anemia has three major consequences for adolescent girls: (i) decreased school performance (and challenges in concentration); (ii) loss of productivity; and (iii) decreased current and future reproductive health for those that become pregnant.

In the poorest countries, children are likely to be infected when they stop breastfeeding and continually infected and uninfected for the rest of their lives. Only rarely does infection have acute consequences for children. Instead, the infection is long-term and chronic and can negatively affect all aspects of a child’s development: health, nutrition, cognitive development, learning and educational access and achievement.
